Alstroemeria, which is native to South America and commonly called the Peruvian lily or lily of the Incas, is a genus of generally long-lived, herbaceous perennials with exotic, orchidlike blooms that attract butterflies and other pollinators. The plants come in a broad selection of colours, and are attractively speckled, streaked or veined with contrasting hues. There are tall and miniature varieties, so they can be used to brighten gardens, borders and containers. A staple of professionally arranged, fresh-cut bouquets, the blooms will last in a vase for more than two weeks. With their fleshy, tuberous roots, alstroemeria are likely to rot if they sit in too much water, so plant them in well-drained, fertile soil. They have few issues with pests or disease.
