Heucheras are evergreen to semi-evergreen, herbaceous perennials that are native to North America. They are commonly called coral bells, a reference to the red, bell-shaped flowers of Heuchera sanguine, or alumroot, because some varieties were once used as an astringent to stop bleeding. While heucheras produce small bunches of delicate, pretty flowers on tall stalks, gardeners like them because they have beautiful foliage and grow well in shaded areas. Heucheras are often used to fill in gaps between other plants. They also grow well in pots. Leaf colours range from red to green, though most varieties produce deep purple or burgundy foliage. The range of available colours allows heucheras to complement most other plants in almost any design.
