Looking to add a bit of nostalgia to your garden? Then look no further! Tree peonies are woody, deciduous shrub peonies. They lose their foliage in fall, but their woody stems do not die back to the ground like herbaceous peonies, so tree peonies grow taller each year. Hanakisoi, known to have grown in Japan prior to 1910, produces large, 8" blooms that are medium to vivid pink in colour. Bees and other pollinators find themselves helplessly drawn to the fragrant flowers, which sit neatly atop the ornamental foliage.

Planting & Care

Planting InstructionsDig a planting hole 12" wide and deep, incorporating some garden compost and fertilizer. Plant this grafted bareroot tree peonies deeply. The graft union should be 3 to 4" below the soil. This will encourage the tree peony to make fresh roots and basal shoots. Do not overwater newly planted tree peonies. This is the biggest cause of failure.

Watering RequirementsAverage water needs. Avoid water-logged soils and dry soils.

PruningTree peonies require no or minimal pruning. If needed cut back just above new growth in summer or in fall. Removal of the oldest stems down to the base in the fall after leaf-fall encourages bushier growth, but this is normally not necessary the first 7-10 years.

Winter CareNone special, a mulch could be a good idea in the coldest zones the first winters
